Catching wind of a show with The Skulls not far from Skate Scene Media's home base, we headed down to San Juan Capistrano to The Depot. Coming along with us was Michael Gage who just flew in from Indianapolis. Michael skates for Team Goon and was out here for a photo shoot and to skate some pools. When we got there we found out that a band that we wanted to check out, Broken Bottles were on the bill too. Before the show we hung out with the guys from The Skulls and going up the street for some drinks before the show.

How you do it

Now back to The Depot, Michael busted out his deck to do a little skating before the show. He told the guys from The Skulls to lay down and he would ollie over them. At first they were not sure about this, yet they were game and laid down. The 3 foot high and 7 feet in distance was no biggy. Billy Bones was just like WOW man how do you do that.

Heading inside to get another on draft New Castle after the skate break we wanted to make sure the we did not miss Broken Bottles.  This is a band that we had been hearing about for a while now. Here is a band with it's own sound that blends the sounds of the many Orange County Punk bands. Their music is a welcome addition to family of OC Punk Rock.

Broken Bottles

With a sound that is best described as having a flavor of what you would have experienced if you saw Social Distortion back in 1983 at the Galaxy in Fullerton. We have seen allot of bands that are not original and lack the talent to make a lasting mark on the Southern California Punk scene and Broken Bottles is a breath of fresh air. This band has everything going on to be a factor on the scene and should be on the VANS Warped tour for sure playing for big crowds.

This four piece is comprised of: Jes "The Mess": Guitar & Vocals, Darren Sullivan: Guitar, Travis Rich: Bass, Drew Rowlett: Drums. Their set was lively and had no dead points. The themes of the songs have plenty of substance and reality backed by a tight - fast band. This is a full on slam dance Punk band. After their set we felt like going out and breaking some bottles and flipping a cop car - we were hyped.

The 5 song demo that they sent us last week was very consistent with what we experienced live. This is a band on the move so go see them so that you can say that you saw them before they busted out. A record label would have to be crazy to not sign these guys up to do a full length CD. Broken Bottles will not disappoint if you see them live.

After their set we retreated back to the lounge area to chat with friends and get ready for The Skulls to close out the night. When ever, where ever The Skulls are a Punk Rock good time. We have been to a few of their shows and never seem to get bored with the energy they bring to the stage.
The funest part of the show was the large group of kids who were between 14-16 years old that came to see The Skulls. The only thing wrong was that The Depot is 21 and over so they could not get in .... no problem. These kids could still see the show through the window and hear the music just fine. The members of The Skulls made the outside crowd part of the show, playing a few songs in tribute to the groms that represent the longevity of Punk Rock. They had their own pit going on outside and had just as good of time as if they paid to get in.

After the show The Skulls went outside to meet the kids and thank them for coming to the show. The kids were set up with plenty of Skulls buttons and stickers. They got a chance to hang out with these guys for a while and talk Punk Rock.

Look for The Skulls to play a huge skate show at the Galaxy Theater in Orange County. They will be providing the sounds for an afternoon of vert ramp ripping featuring riders from VISION and Team Goon on Sunday August 11th.
