Ó Skate Scene Media

.

Here we are way too bright....well overcast, and way too early in the morning cruising up the freeway to Hermosa Beach. We were all stoked to be heading to the Soul Bowl to take in the Masters and Grand Masters bowl comp. While clipping along at 60mph on the 405 freeway we got in a major accident. As we start to come around a bend in the car pool lane we see a van ahead of us that is breaking hard for a car that was sitting in the car pool lane. The person had ran out of gas in the lane that was staring at the gas cap - like that was gonna put gas in the car. Needless to say we tagged the van slightly at 10mph and then we got punched from behind by a RAV 4 that then sent us across four lanes of the the freeway, ping ponging off a bunch of cars before landing on the shoulder of the freeway. The noise from inside the car getting tagged was unreal - full on NASCAR wreck.
David and your editor walked away from this crash without a scratch on our skateboards, which was good news, ohh and we are ok too. As you can see our ride that has taken us to many pools, events and gigs was totaled which was a bummer. This car has been a good friend to us, taking us anywhere we wanted to go - you will be missed and hard to replace. As they towed the car away we hitched a ride to forge ahead to get to The Soul Bowl to cover the skate action.

Masters  Division

With all the drama of the morning (see above...duhh) we did not get to the bowl till after the first heat of the Masters was underway. Crowd favorite, Steve Caballero was autographing a few decks that were handed over the rail in between runs. Session killers were Jake Piasecki that was going for everything. Aaron Astorga was blasting some of the biggest airs that would have made Christian Hosoi proud.

OG old schooler, Tony Magnusson was cutting loose with some nice Mc Twists and penny smooth 5-0s to fakie. The session was like a Skate Lab Old School Skate Jam on a bigger level with all the guys we watched in the 80's that still tear it up today.

After the 30 minute jam was over we headed to the top deck to await the results. On the way up we ran into Danielle Bostick and her trusted dog. Danielle as many of you know, her along with her husband Don head up World Cup Skateboarding and bring many great events to life. The results of the Masters division are: 1st place - Tony Maganusson, 2nd place - Steve Caballero, 3rd Place Aaron Astorga. Shout outs go to Eric Nash and Jake Pisasecki - both these guys shredd hard and were defiantly players the entire sess.

Grand Masters  Division

Now we were now starting to get into the scene after all the drama of the morning. One of the guys in the Grand Masters that we were stoked to see in the comp was Alan "Ollie" Gelfand all the way from Florida. He was having a great time hanging out with all his old buddies and jamming the bowl. Plenty of our favs were participating today, Eric Grisham, Dave Hackett, Salba, DP and all the way from Skatopia, Brewce Martin as well as many other notables from the old school.
Don Hamilton who was the oldest guy out there mixed it up with plenty of his contemporaries from the past on a sample of his new deck that commemorates his 40 years in the life. For his first Soul Bowl event was Brain Mank. Brian does not show his age at all, blasting for sweet airs and plenty of stylish lip tricks. One thing is for sure that all these guys that competed today can put on a strong show anywhere they go. The overall vibe of the jam session was more like a bunch of drinking buddies hanging out at their favorite pool and sharing runs. Salba had some of the most consistent runs with plenty of double corner grinds, aerial work, hand plants and these nollie grinds on the extension that are executed with precision.

Duane Peters is sic

Duane Peters who is the front man for The Hunns with his fire breathing girlfriend Corey on bass, as well as US BOMBS still can find time to shredd with his busy schedule. Duane told us that he was gonna take part of the summer off from the bands to skate an surf more, so don't be surprised if you find yourself sessioning somewhere with him. Duane killed the entire session, landing revert rail grabs off the extension that should have sent him straight to the bottom of the bowl, frontside airs and plenty of gnarly lip tricks..

Once the clock ran out on the session we just knew that DP was the winner. The scores were tabulated and the voice of skateboarding, Dave Duncan announced the winners for the 2003 Hermosa Beach Soul Bowl Grand Masters.

1st place - Duane Peters, 2nd Place - Brain Mank, 3rd Place - Steve Alba.
This will go down as one of the more memorable events we have covered. With the near death experience on the freeway in the morning to the off the hook skating that went down today. We have always appreciated your support and we know that allot of you out there rely on our coverage to stay current. If anyone out there can help us out with some wheels - let us know.
