The Friday night report from The Whiskey as told by Team Goon forum member Buzz.

Bands on this show were: Carre Callaway, Neorelic, 7th Fall, The Pegs, Diana Cancer & The 45 Grave Robbers

There wasn't many people at the show Friday night (due to poor promotion by The Whiskey). I hung out with Dinah Cancer, Rikk Agnew, Roger the merch guy, Team Goon Brad and a very friendly couple who came all the way from France to see this show. The first act was a girl by the name of Carre Callaway who did mainly acoustic numbers with a little metal punk thrown in. I give her credit for getting up there and playing the music that she believed in and was very impressed by her beautiful voice. The second group was Neorelic, a band that was a retroactive throwback to seventies hard rock. Harmonica, guitar solos, stage strutting and the whole 70's thing. They put their best effort forward, but I think they would have been better off in a non-punk environment. This group probably would have been big in the 70's if they were around back then. The next group was 7th Fall, a hard rocking punk / metal band with a beautiful blonde girl singing the lead vocals. They rocked hard and the singer had a great voice. The next band was The Pegs! This is the group I was looking forward to seeing, as I own one of their 45's, but have never before seen them in a live environment. These guys splattered my brains all over the Whisky ceiling. Fast, furious, fun, hard slamming punk rock and roll which brought me memories of the good old days at the Starwood shows. The Pegs had the pit moving pretty good. They ended the set with the guitarist diving into the drum kit midway into a song! Now that's what I call punk rock! Next was Dinah Cancer and The 45 Grave Robbers. The band lineup included Hal Satan on drums, Lisafer on bass, Daniel De Leon doing guitar, Rikk Agnew (punk veteran guitar God) and Dinah Cancer (queen of Death Rock vocals). The band rocked hard, heavy and fast with a blazing set of Punk-Deathrock-Metal. Some of the highlights included the songs Riboflavin, Evil, 45 Grave, Surf Bat and Party Time. After several other songs, they ended the set with Black Cross. The show ended about 10:30, due to the fact that The Whisky had another show scheduled right after 45 Grave. The only thing missing was that they didn't play "Wax". My biggest question of the night was: Where the heck was everybody? Where were all the punks? That place should have been packed to the walls! This group puts on a great punk rock show, so turn off the TV and go out and see them sometime. They are one of the original punk bands who helped kick the scene in it's early days. Hats off to Rikk Agnew, who is one of the coolest punk rockers I have ever met. A true guitar genius and a perfect gentleman.

As the sun came back up it would be hours before we would head back out to a show, so some of us spent the day skating. This house with this pool was seriously thrashed, complete with crack heads living in the gutted out house. This little roman pool had some nice tranny to it. We did not hang here too long and then went to a skatepark for the rest of the afternoon.

We headed out on Saturday night to catch a couple of newer bands play with an old favorite. Alex and his Droogs, and the Bonzos were the supporting bands for ADZ at the CIA in Hollywood. This is a really cool place with lots of weird stuff to look at, from dead clowns to mummified alligator guys.

There has been a buzz around town about the Bonzos, so we figured that we’d check these guys out and see what the fuss is all about. All we’ve got to say is that The Bonzos did not disappoint at all. These guys had a great stage presence and some ripping tunes. They even have an oversized M&M plush as part of their props! How can you go wrong with that?

Alex and his Droogs were up next and since we saw them the previous weekend, we knew what to expect. As we said before, this is a good band with great fundamentals. One of the more catchy songs that they played was a song titled “Manic Subsidal”.

Tony Reflex (of The Adolescents and ADZ) finally showed up, which meant that ADZ were just about ready to take the stage. As the band set up, some in the crowd were already yelling for their favorite songs. Though it wasn’t a large venue, what it lacked in size it made up in intimacy and interest. Throughout ADZ’s set Tony kept on mentioning how much he loved that place and how rad he thought it was. Everyone at the show loved the fog machine and the weird lights and had a great time listening to ADZ.

We met up with Tony outside after the show and had a rather long chat about the old days, music, and whatever else was on our minds…even a killer rat...

Sunday we decided to go out to Long Beach and check out a couple of other bands that we’ve been hearing a lot about. Comprehend and the Wargasms played at Di Piazza’s, a pizza place/venue. Comprehend was up first, and really blew us away. These guys are definitely a hidden jewel within the punk scene. These guys have a really tight sound and fast songs. If you like bands with a lot of old school influences, then Comprehend would bee a good band to check out.

Finally the Wargasms took the stage. Now, if you’ve seen the Wargasms before then you know what to expect when you see them. Lots of wild on stage antics and intense tunes make up a full set by these Long Beach punks. If you want to see a sedate show and don’t want to be harassed by the lead singer, K.O., then you had better stay home because the Wargasms have plenty of energy to go around and lots of smart-aleck remarks to make.

Look out guys; there’s a whole new generation of punks to carry the torch of mayhem and fun.
