After a night of party'n till 1am at the LOST party we were out the door early with the help of a few Red Bulls to get to Lake Elsinore by 8:30. We picked up our flow rider Andrew Mercado who was gonna represent in the Triple Threat competition since all the other riders were spread out skating at other places this weekend.
So what the hell was the Triple Threat? This was a comp where you had 3 disciplines, Downhill Slalom, Street Course and Mini ramp. Skaters had to participate in all 3 events successfully if they wanted to have a chance of placing.
Andrew had never done slalom before and took the offer from the pros to come out on Friday and get schooled on how to properly do it so that he would be ready for Saturday. He evidently listened well and was getting down through the cones with pretty consistent times that were considered pretty fast for a person who was only on their 2nd time out.

By now more and more skaters were showing up and began to take runs down the long hill. The hill stretched about a half mile with some guys reaching speeds of 30 plus miles per hour which is flying on a skateboard while weaving back and forth. The youngest skater to take on the hill was Nathan Groff who skates for Death Box who is the son of pro downhill racer Eric "ARAB" Groff - good going dad!

There were all kinds of people that showed up, the Carrasco brothers, Duane Peters, Jay Smith, Buddy Carr, Omar Hassan, Dave Hackett, Steve Olson, Lyn Kramer, Dave Duncan, Eddie Reattegui and Chicken Barrett to name a few as well as the man responsible for allot of the skate decks shape and design, Chuck Hults.
The hill that was used is shared by the only road that the fire station uses. A few times through out the day the course had to be closed, the cones moved very fast so that the fire truck could get through quickly to go on an emergency run. Rather than blab on and pretend like we are some kind of experts in the downhill arena, we decided to post a whole lot of photos that you can click on to get a feel for the action that took place.

The sun was now starting to set and the mini ramp and street portion of the program was now starting to get underway all while guys were still flying down the hill. This part had a really cool vibe that seemed more like a bunch of friends hanging out skating than an actual competition.
Dave Hackett was killing the mini like as if he was skating his favorite backyard pool all the while Tony Mag was mixing it up with some techy style. Duane Peters on the other hand was putting it all out there, grinding his 215 Indy's all over the place and taking a few hard hits in the process.
Once it was all over Duane was awarded the top spot in the Triple Threat Masters division. In the open division Eric Britton representing the Z Cult was the overall winner. A shout out goes out to Andrew Mercado who scored an overall 6th in the slalom portion which allot of the pro guys gave him props for doing so well considering that he had no previous experience in slalom racing. They believed that his pool skating gave him the looseness and agility to do well today.

We then headed out for the day to go relax and roll over to The
Gypsy Lounge back in Orange County to go see Duane Peters and the Hunns play ..........

Now back in OC we settled in to the scene over at The Gypsy Lounge where the place was packed with people that could not get in all over the parking lot and courtyard. We just kind of wondered what kind of animal Duane is to skate at an event all day and then go a put on a show. Totally action filled show with plenty of slamming.
