The vert doubles was the only skate competition on Saturday aside from the men's park practice session earlier. 7:30pm was the scheduled start of the doubles comp on the largest vert ramp ever assembled by the ramp builders, Team Pain. If you have the bank, this is the kind of ramp you would want at your house! |
As the doubles went off it was like watching a structured snake session. Guys were coming inches from colliding at times and were pulling tricks literally on top of each other. |
| During the comp, the team of Tas Pappas and Lincoln Ueda were not able to put together runs better than 65.00 yet Tas was pulling out all the stops. Tas was actually trying to land a 900 and after a few attempts came dam close. Tony Hawk who was on the side lines dropped in across the ramp to give Tas a few tips and let him know that he was very close to pulling it. After about 8 tries he still could not get it, yet everyone knows that he was VERY close. |

Rune Glifberg and Mike Crum took the silver medal by posting an 89.33 in their first run, executing a heelflip frontslide, a McTwist, a synchronized 180 to a nollie 360, capped by an impressive over under. Glifberg also won a bronze medal Friday, August 15th skating solo at the Skateboard Vert competition. Buster Halterman and Neal Hendrix took third place, completing a clamshell tailslide, an over/under, and two consecutive 360s. Three teams including Halterman and Hendrix were tied for third prize with scores of 86.00, but Halterman and Hendrix were awarded the bronze because they had the highest next-best score among the pairs knotted at 86.00. |

Bucky Lasek and Bob Burnquist, also know as the “Killer B’s”, earned a massive 96.67 score on their last run. The run contained a clamshell revert, tailside revert, nosegrab, frontside revert, flip to fakie board transfer before the crowd of 25,800 at STAPLES Center. On hand to support the contestants were five-time doubles champions Andy Macdonald and Tony Hawk. Macdonald and Hawk did not compete this year, clearing the way for a new team to reign at the X Games Vert Doubles competition. |
|
Bucky and Bob put together a run that rivaled Tony and Andy’s previous first place runs. “We wish Tony and Andy would have competed,” said Bob, “But we appreciate their support. We love the X Games. It was a great run.” |
